Local growth is a major issue. It has always amazed me how little people understand the unintended consequences of not planning for this growth, regardless of the obstacles that local governments can place in its path. Now the California Public Policy Institute confirms how little citizens understand growth issues. See the excellent article by Dan Walters: Voters are ignorant about growth - but fear its impacts in the Sunday Bee.

“A new poll by the Public Policy Institute of California finds that while the state's residents don't really know much about future population growth, they're worried about its effects, yet mistrust local and state officials to deal with those impacts.”

This mistrust results in endless public meetings and legal challenges, which are based on little knowledge, only vague feelings of mistrust. Just think, a little knowledge could could ease citizen fears and result in a some effective planning for the inevitable growth. Not likely!

Tell me what you think
